Julian Andrew Moore ACC 202 Module 3-2: Costing Methods
The Hidden Costs of Financial Empowerment
In today’s financial landscape, empowering women requires innovative solutions. Her First 100K, an education platform founded by Tori Dunlap, tackles this challenge by providing financial resources, courses, and podcasts specifically for Gen Z and Millennial women (Dunlap, T. (n.d.)). Unlike traditional businesses that manufacture products or sell merchandise, Her First 100K is a service organization focused on financial education.
Selecting the most suitable costing method is important for any business to accurately track expenses and make informed decisions. For Her First 100K, with its standardized services like courses and podcast, job order costing is not ideal. This method is better suited for businesses with unique projects or client work, where costs can be directly attributed to each project. Assigning specific costs like instructor fees or editing software to individual courses in Her First 100K’s case would be difficult. A more fitting approach is process costing. This method tracks costs throughout ongoing production processes. Because Her First 100K’s content
creation can be viewed as a continuous flow, costs like recording equipment, software subscriptions, and instructor fees can be accumulated and averaged across all educational materials produced. Her First 100K’s shop focus has been educational courses such as debt relief
and understanding the stock market along with understanding the different types of accounts like a high yield savings account (Dunlap, T. (n.d.)). This would result in an average cost per course or content piece, simplifying cost tracking and pricing decisions. Implementing job costing, on the other hand, would be complex and potentially inaccurate, failing to reflect the overall cost picture due to the standardized nature of Her First 100K’s offerings. Since Her First 100K is not a manufacturing company, the term “factory overhead” doesn’t directly apply. However, there are indirect costs involved such as marketing, technology,
and salaries. Marketing and advertising would include expenses for promoting courses and the platform. Technology and software would include website maintenance, content creation tools, and podcasting hosting. While salaries and benefits include staff costs for instructores, editors,
and administrators. Her First 100K could benefit from activity-based costing (ABC), which assigns indirect cost based on activities that drive those costs. Content creation hours allocate editing and production costs based on the time spent on each course or content piece. Marketing channels track advertising costs specific to each marketing channel whether it’s social media, website ads, etc. Allocating platform maintenance costs based on the number of users accessing the content. Process costing is the most suitable method for Her First 100K . It simplifies cost tracking for their standardized services and provides an average cost per unit. Units being the courses or podcast episodes. Additionally, implementing ABC can offer deeper insights into how
specific activities drive indirect costs. This allows for more informed decisions about resource allocation and pricing strategies. By combining process costing with ABC, Her First 100K can gain a clear understanding of their overall costs and optimize their financial management for continued growth and success in empowering women financially. ACC2273 “Is there anything wrong?”
Scenario 1
You run a small business that takes older machines and refurbishes them to sell at a “charitable” price. You are doing good for the environment and helping those who need these machines get one at a reasonable price when otherwise they would not have been able to afford one. … yes, business is and can be about helping others, it is not all about making a profit and selling stuff to people that don’t necessarily need stuff.
As the owner you have hired a few people to run the business. They look after purchasing and selling, collecting and distributing. You charge (sell the machines for) a small “up-charge” of 5% over cost to cover your operating costs.
Some pertinent financial data for 2022: beginning inventory $5,000, ending inventory $6,000, purchases for the year $61,000 and sales for the year $15,000.

Cost Behavior, High-Low Method, Pricing Decision
Fonseca, Ruiz, and Dunn is a large, local accounting firm located in a southwestern city. Carlos Ruiz, one of the firm's founders, appreciates the success his firm has enjoyed and wants to give something back to his community. He believes that an inexpensive accounting services clinic could provide basic accounting services for small businesses located in the barrio. He wants to price the services at cost.
Since the clinic is brand new, it has no experience to go on. Carlos decided to operate the clinic for 2 months before determining how much to charge per hour on an ongoing basis. As a temporary measure, the clinic adopted an hourly charge of $25, half the amount charged by Fonseca, Ruiz, and Dunn for professional services.
The accounting services clinic opened on January 1. During January, the clinic had 120 hours of professional service. During February, the activity was 150 hours. Costs for these two levels of activity usage are as…
